School for 2012 is coming to an end and Christmas is only just around the corner. Many families and friends will be coming together all over Australia, and many will be heading on a road trip to get there. We’ve compiled a list of 9 road trip apps to help make the drive less stressful and easy going.
1. Packing Pro+
Never again will you forget to pack important items for your trip. With Packing Pro+ you can set up multiple packing lists (per bag or per person) with easy navigation between sections to keep you organised. It also features a smart search function to help you find exactly what you need.
Geoffrey Goetz of Gigaom wrote that this is also a great app for your ‘next’ trip as the app’s real value comes from continued use. You can add things that you forgot on your current trip and delete things you never used.
Evernote is a great tool for every phase of your road trip. It helps you to capture and store important information all in one place that is accessible on any device, all you need is your login details.
Some of the things you can do are: gather info on things to do, save all receipts and reservation numbers, plan your itinerary and prepare checklists, and forward important emails to evernote so you don’t miss anything. For more info take a look at Evernote’s travel series of blog posts.
Have you upgraded to iOS 6 and not a fan of Apple’s own maps app? Waze has you covered. Waze is a free navigation app bursting with features you’d normally see in a paid application, these include: spoken turn by turn navigation, spoken street names, real time traffic alerts, free regular updates, easy destination search (and integrated search with Google, Foursquare and Bing), and user contribution features such as toll road avoidance and real time fuel prices!
4. Pocket Weather
If you own a smartphone and you haven’t heard of this Aussie weather app then what have you been doing!? This is one of the most popular weather apps from a development group in Adelaide called Shifty Jelly.
It has an interface that is very easy on the eye and boasts precise weather data straight from the Bureau of Meteorology, push notifications for weather updates and warnings, plus Radars. It also features ‘follow me’, which gives you current location based weather updates when you open the app. This is great for road trips as you move from town to town.
5. Petrol Map
Petrol Map lists all seven petrol brands in Australia with around 5,500 locations across the country. The app will display the service stations around you with branded markers so you know exactly where to get discount fuel. You can also view the address and location, what the service station has available (ATM, food, car wash etc) and receive turn by turn guidance.
6. Road Trip
Although the name doesn’t do this app justice, Road Trip is an all in one app for tracking your fuel economy and fuel costs, maintenance history and when services are due. It will also track your expenses along the journey, giving you the opportunity to compare vacation and trip costs along with how much you spend on your car overall. Road Trip is also available in HD if you have an iPad on your journey.
Price: $4.99 (Lite version is FREE)
Getting a bit weary along the journey and need to make an unexpected stop over for the night? Not to worry, Wotif can help you find a great accommodation deal at a great price. With accommodation in over 66 countries there will definitely be something on offer wherever you are in Australia.
“Looking for a pizza place open now? A pub nearby? A petrol station you can drive to before your tank hits empty? Yelp for your iPhone or iPad (and Android) is here to help. Use us to search for places to eat, shop, drink, relax and play then read reviews from an active community of locals in the know.”
Who doesn’t love taking photos with their smartphone? These days we take photos of anything and everything from our food to shots of our outfits in the mirror! So why not document your road trip with fun filters giving them that ‘old school’ look from when your parents went on vacation.
Instagram gives you the ability to easily capture mobile moments and add several different filtered effects. You can share these photos via your instagram feed or upload them to facebook, twitter, flickr, tumblr, foursquare and postereous instantly.
